Welcome, everyone, to the Amateur Astrologer's blogspot, Seeing Stars. This is my second blog, created to receive spill-out from my first, the Three-to-Nine. Being my personal blog, I write about everything there, from music reviews to my latest romantic debacle. I write about astrology too but, given the jumble of disparate topics, it's a wonder if anyone looking for a feature on astrology would stick around long enough to find it.
I decided that, if I want to engage with others who practice and study astrology on the Web, I need to a space that's purely devoted to writing about and discussing astrology. So Seeing Stars was born.
Now a little about myself: I'm a 20-something college student who got introduced to astrology early in life. When I was in grade school, there was a Japanese cartoon called Sailor Moon. For those of you who don't recognize the iconic hair, Sailor Moon was about a group of crime-fighting superheroines, each with the power of a particular planet. The show's creator, Naoko Takeuchi (who was a member of an Astronomy Club in college) clearly had astrology in mind when she fashioned her characters into being. For example, Sailor Mars called herself the "Soldier of War." In her civilian form, she was Rei Hino, born March 14th, an impulsive Aries.
I've read that the things we're attracted to as children often serve as clues to what we're meant to do as adults. The cartoon led me to research the planets, but I always found myself more attracted to the mythology behind them: "Mercury is named after the messenger-god of ancient Rome." Sometimes, there would be a passing mention of astrology - "Ancient people tracked the movements of the stars to predict the future" - and from there, it was only a short time before I started asking, "How? Can I learn?"
("Can I learn?" might be my quintessential question. I have a Sun-Jupiter conjunction in Gemini in the Ninth House.)
Since then, I do my best to keep up with the topic. My favorite way to do this is by following the blogs of various astrologers (see my "reading list" column on the right), especially those whose work I've seen in The Mountain Astrologer. They've shown me there is a vibrant astrological community online.
So, I welcome anyone who'd like to talk about the subject. I'm a student too, so welcome.
